Testing materials for our model Viking Longships

We have been developing our skills for working scientifically by planning and conducting an investigation to find which material would be best for our model Viking Longship. We discussed the importance of creating a fair test which variables we would change and which we would keep the same. We decided to measure the strength of the material by measuring how much weight the boat could support. We also developed our origami skills by creating our boats from paper, card, tracing paper, foil and newspaper. Most groups predicted that the tracing paper would be the best material because of it is both strong and water resistant. However, our results were not necessarily what we might have expected!
