Dear parents and carers,
What a great first full week year 5 have had! I have been so impressed with how well the class are settling and also how hard they are working. I'm really enjoying getting to know the children and I hope that they are also enjoying the new school year as much as I am. In English we are working on a gorgeous picture book called Float by Daniel Miyares. This wordless picture book tells the story of a young boy who makes a paper boat, and takes this precious and flimsy toy out into a storm. We have been working hard on "reading" the pictures, and using skills of inference and deduction to work out what is happening and how the character feels. We've been pulling that into our modelled writing, where the children are working hard on justifying their vocabulary choices and are also picking up lots of new grammar knowledge. Next week we'll be continuing with this modelled writing, before we start to plan our own writing the week after. In maths at the moment we are working on lots of place value work, including reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers up to 1,000,000, as well as rounding numbers and also learning how to read and write Roman numerals! The children are trying very hard with some very challenging work, and they've done a good job of picking up some new learning, and consolidating what they've brought from year 4. Next week we'll be continuing with this place value work, including counting in factors of 10. I have given the children their Spelling Shed logins and set the spellings online. These -ious spellings will be tested next Friday (20th September), when I'll ask them to spell 5 words from this list:
