At Forest School today Year one showed fantastic team work. A group of children decided to throw a rope with tyre attached over a branch then work together to lift the tyre as high up as they could. Some children wanted to be lifted up too. They worked together, they used some fantastic language to communicate what they needed to do, encouraging each other and helping to ensure each other was safe. This activity was completely child led, they created the rules for it themselves and helped each other to achieve their goals. Language, science, maths and PHSE all in one game.

We have had another busy week in Cole Class.
In English we have continued with our new unit 'My Christmas Star'. We have been writing sentences including adverbs. We have also been finding out about contractions and spotting them in different texts e.g I've, don't, he'd. In Maths we have been finding 10 more and 10 less, and have been adding and subtracting 10 from a range of numbers up to 100. We have been using our knowledge on number bonds to 10 to help us with trickier calculations. Our number bonds are something we need to continue to practise and could be done at home: 1 + 9 = 10 2 + 8 = 10 3 + 7 = 10, and so on. We have also been practising for our Christmas performance on the stage. Next week we hope to practise with props and without our scripts! In maths this week we have started our new unit of work on multiplication and division. We have begun by focusing on multiplying by three, dividing by three and then finally, looking at the three times table as a whole. We have been applying our times table knowledge to problem solving questions, and using lots of practical strategies such as grouping and sharing numbers.
We had a great PE lesson on Thursday, despite the cold weather! We were focusing on the different types of passes in netball – a chest pass, a bounce pass and an over-head pass. I was really impressed with how quickly the children picked up on the techniques! In Science this week we investigated the properties of different soils. First of all, we thought about what soil was and discussed what we already knew about its properties. Then, we learnt about how soil is made and what the different components are. For the rest of the lesson, we looked at 5 different types of soils. We observed them to start off with and thought about the different colours, then we used the magnifying glasses to observe them more closely, and finally we sieved the different soils to compare the particle sizes. At the end of the lesson we compared what we originally thought soil was like with what we have now learned; some of the things we know now are - not all soils are dark brown, some soils are quite dry and fine, and soils can have all sorts of things in them, like roots and shells. This week’s spellings have been set on Spelling Shed; we will have a short test on Tuesday next week. Spelling Rules: Adding suffixes beginning with vowel letters to words of more than one syllable. The consonant letter is not doubled if the syllable is unstressed. Gardening Gardener Limited Limiting Developing Developed Listening Listened Covered Covering Dear parents and carers, We had a really exciting day on Wednesday, when we were visited by art teachers from St Helen and St Katherine school as part of an art project on abstract art, which will lead to the children exhibiting their art at the school in February. The children worked hard on colour mixing and also on using collage techniques to create abstract art based around the art of American Sarah Cain. Sarah uses bright colours and patterns in her artwork, which bridges the inside and outside of buildings. Spellings for this week:

On Tuesday 19th November I presented our work on being an active school to School Games Organisers and National Governing Bodies of Sport at the School Games National Summit in Coventry. Despite being a rather nerve wracking experience speaking in front of sport experts, it was great to be given the opportunity to share the work that we do to be an active school. Thank you to everyone in our school community for supporting our work on this. A big thank you to Danny Taylor (our local School Games Organiser) for all of his help and support too. It was a privilege to have been recognised by the Youth Sport Trust for our work in this area and to showcase our wonderful children at a National event. I also had the opportunity to listen to ex-England footballer Phil Neville talk about his work with the Lionnesses which was great! We are looking forward to working with the Youth Sport Trust again later in the year to create a Case Study video to showcase our active school work. Miss Leggett On Monday 11th November, our U11 Boccia Teams went to Botley Primary School to take part in the West Oxford Partnership Boccia Festival. We had three teams of three children. The first team was Ronnie, Anneke and Sophia. The second team was Timmy, William and Matthew. The last team was Bella, Bella and Alfie. Each team played a few matches and the whole event lasted for 2 hours. This event was a practise ready for the Vale Finals Boccia Competition which takes place next week. Good luck to our teams.
Report written by Anneke and Ronnie Thames Class have worked hard over the past few weeks to produce some fantastic World War Two artwork in the style of Lowry.
Last week Thames Class thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the Steam Museum. During the trip took part in two different hands on sessions at the museum, one involved the children going into an air raid shelter so they could experience what it was like for children living through the Blitz in the Second World War and the other involved climbing on board a train and experiencing what it was like for children who were evacuated in the Second World War.
In English we have continued with our work based on The True Story of the Three Little Pigs; the children have been making some great predictions about what might happen in this version of the story!
In maths this week we have come to the end of our unit of work on addition and subtraction. On Tuesday, we worked on a code breaker activity; the children had to work out the answers to addition and subtraction questions using the column method, then they had to find the answers which were stuck on the walls. The answers revealed a letter which formed part of a word needed to crack the code. The children were really determined to crack the code and enjoyed working out what the message was! In Computing with Mrs Bayliss, the class have been learning how to use PowerPoint. Mrs Bayliss has been really impressed with how quickly the children have picked up the key skills needed. So far, they have learnt how to add a new slide, add text and have started to learn how to format the slides with animations. The children are working in pairs to create a presentation about a topic of their choice which they will show at the end of term. This week’s spellings have been set on Spelling Shed; we will have a short test on Tuesday next week. Spelling Rules: The prefix ’mis-’ Misbehave Mislead Misspell Mistake Misplace Misread Misunderstanding Misuse Mislaid Both of our PE lessons are outdoors this term; please make sure that your child has warm clothing. We have been working hard this week to get to grips with our Christmas production of Tinsel and Tea Towels. We have been practising reading our lines and learning all the lovely songs, which you can now practise at home too!
In English, we have started to look at our new unit based on My Christmas Star - a BBC Christmas advert from several years ago. The children are loving the song 'Symphony' by Clean Bandit, which accompanies the advert. We have been talking about similes this week and how we can use them in our own writing. In Maths, we have been looking at patterns between numbers, and how our number bonds to 10 help us to solve problems involving bonds to 100. We have been using bar models to continue to help us find fact families. |
