St Aldates KS2 children were learning about Colombia, a South American country that England knocked out of the World Cup!
We found out a bit about the geography and culture of Colombia, and then had a go at some Colombian themed activities.
A ruana is a type of shawl which is traditional piece of Colombian clothing. We designed our own ruanas and had a go at weaving which is how ruanas would be made.
Some of us learnt how to dance the basic step of a cumbia, a traditional Colombian dance. We listened to cumbia music and noticed that it has lots of drums and shakers, so we put together a rhythmical piece of music which our dancers could dance to. To help us remember our rhythms, we played in times to phrases which were based on what we had learnt about Colombia. Try saying these phrases and notice the rhythms you make:
Beach, jungle, mountain
Hot sandy beach
Bring me some hot coffee, hot coffee, hot coffee!
