Today we had a great surprise when we arrived at school- Mrs Barker had borrowed a moth trap and had left it set up overnight! We had lots of different moths to look at in the trap.
The trap works by having a bright ultra-violet light, which attracts the moths. There are two pieces of perspex in a V-shape which act as the trap, and then lots of little dark spaces (in egg boxes) for the moths to hide in.
We had two wonderful pink and green elephant hawk moths in the trap. The children could not believe how large and colourful they are! We put them into pots for a while to have a closer look, before we released all of the moths back into their natural habitat. Now we are trying to identify the other species that we found.
